Buying & variants

Which CZ 457 should I buy?

Depends on use: American/Lux for classic sporters, Varmint/Pro-Varmint SR for heavy-barrel range use, MTR/LRP for match chambers, Scout for kids, chassis models for competition. See our variants page (44 configurations).

med Sources: CZ Our research notes
What calibers are offered?

.22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR, all on the same bolt. .17 HM2 only via aftermarket barrels.

high Sources: CZ Our research notes
How much does a CZ 457 cost?

CZ US 2026 MSRPs run from $649 (Scout) through $729 (American), $999 (Varmint MTR) to $2,399 (Manners/Precision Chassis MTR). Prices as of Oct 2026 — recheck.

high Sources: CZ Our research notes
What's the difference between the 452, 455 and 457?

452: threaded/pinned barrel, 90° bolt. 455 (2010): set-screw interchangeable barrels. 457 (2019): shorter slab-sided action, 60° bolt, push-to-fire safety, new adjustable trigger, lighter striker.

high Sources: GUNS Magazine GunsAmerica
What does MTR mean?

'Match Target Rifle' — the chamber is cut to the tightest CIP limits for match ammo. CZ's 2019 MTR guarantee was 15 mm at 50 m.

high Sources: GunsAmerica Our research notes
Is there a left-handed 457?

Yes, but limited: American LH, Varmint LH and Premium LH.

high Sources: Our research notes
Does it come with iron sights?

Some models (Lux, Training Rifle, Scout) have iron sights; American/Varmint are scope-only.

Ammunition

What ammo should I use?

CZ: factory CIP/SAAMI-compliant ammunition matching the caliber. For MATCH-chambered models (e.g., Varmint MTR), match ammo is recommended and non-standard (high power, longer case) ammo is not.

high Sources: CZ manual
Why is my MTR picky or hard to chamber?

The match chamber is minimum-spec, so some ammo chambers tightly or extracts lazily. See known issues #2.

high Sources: CZ manual Our research notes
Can I dry-fire it?

CZ says the 457's lighter striker won't be damaged by dry-fire, but the manual still doesn't recommend excessive dry firing and suggests snap caps.

high Sources: CZ manual Our research notes
Which ammo did competitors use?

In the 2023 IPRF PR22 survey, SK Long Range was most common, followed by Lapua, RWS and Eley — but ammo performance is rifle-specific.

Scopes & mounts

How do I mount a scope?

The receiver has an integral 11 mm dovetail (not drilled and tapped). Use 11 mm rings or a clamp-on Picatinny rail. CZ's manual suggests having a gunsmith mount and zero the scope.

high Sources: CZ manual American Rifleman
Why does my scope base slide?

Set-screw dovetail bases can creep; clamp-type rails (Area 419, EGW, MDT) fix it. Area 419 specifies 22 in-lb on its clamp screws.

high Sources: Anarchy Outdoors Our research notes
Do CZ 455 scope bases fit?

Don't assume so — receiver geometry differs. Buy 457-specific bases.

med Sources: Our research notes
Will a large ocular bell clear the bolt?

The 60° bolt lift was introduced specifically to allow larger ocular bells and lower rings.

high Sources: GunsAmerica

Magazines

Which magazines fit?

.22 LR polymer 5/10/15/25, steel 5/10 and a single-shot adapter; .22 WMR/.17 HMR polymer 5/10. .22 LR mags fit 452/453/455/457/512.

high Sources: Our research notes GunsAmerica
Why is there an insert in the mag well?

The magazine-housing insert is used only with .22 LR. Remove it when fitting a .22 WMR/.17 HMR barrel.

high Sources: CZ manual
Are there extensions?

MKM +3 (for 5- and 10-rd mags) and Anarchy +3.

high Sources: Our research notes
The mag release is hard to reach in my chassis.

Common in chassis builds — extended releases (Anarchy Gen II, MDT latch kit) address it. See known issues #8.

Triggers

What's the factory trigger range?

Standard trigger: adjustable 8-15 N (1.8-3.4 lb), factory set 11.1-14 N. 'Comfort' trigger: 5-7 N, factory 6±0.5 N.

high Sources: CZ manual
How do I adjust the trigger?

With the stock removed, screw A sets pull and B sets travel after firing; screw C in the trigger sets travel before firing. Then do the manual's safety check: on the unloaded rifle, cycle the bolt and safety repeatedly — it must not fire.

high Sources: CZ manual
What aftermarket triggers fit?

457-specific units: Timney CZ457 (10 oz-2 lb), JARD (3-12 oz), CZ Flyweight two-stage (fits all 457s). 455 triggers don't fit, and TriggerTech has no 457 trigger.

high Sources: CZ Our research notes
Is it OK to go below the factory range?

CZ warns against setting pull too low or travel too short because the rifle could discharge if mishandled. Treat very light setups as competition-only.

high Sources: CZ manual

Barrels

Can I change barrels myself?

CZ markets user-swappable barrels, but its Mini-set instructions say each barrel must be fitted individually by a gunsmith with a headspace gauge. These statements conflict; at minimum, headspace-check every swap.

high Sources: CZ manual CZ
What's the barrel swap procedure?

Per CZ's Mini-set sheet: remove mag and bolt; remove the two stock screws and trigger guard; lift off the stock; fit/remove the .22 LR mag-housing insert; loosen the mag-housing rear screw 1-2 turns; loosen both barrel screws and pull the barrel. Reassemble tightening the mag-housing screw before the barrel screws.

high Sources: CZ manual
What torque for barrel screws?

CZ's Mini-set sheet: 5.5 Nm (~49 in-lb). Note Lilja recommends 35-40 in-lb for its drop-ins — follow the barrel maker for aftermarket barrels.

high Sources: CZ manual Rifle Barrels
Will a heavy barrel fit my American stock?

No — CZ's chart marks Varmint, MTR and LRP barrels incompatible with American, Lux, Premium, Training, Jaguar XII and Royal stocks.

high Sources: CZ manual
Do CZ 455 barrels fit?

Yes, barrels (and mags) share the same interface.

high Sources: CZ manual
What are the twist rates?

.22 LR and .22 WMR 1:16, .17 HMR 1:9.

Cleaning & maintenance

What's the routine disassembly?

Remove the magazine, safety off, open the bolt, press the bolt catch and pull the bolt out. CZ says no further disassembly is needed for routine maintenance.

high Sources: CZ manual
How do I clean the bore?

Clean from the chamber end, push the brush all the way through before reversing, let solvent work ~10 min if very dirty, dry with patches, then lightly oil; pull a dry patch before shooting.

high Sources: CZ manual
Should I strip the bolt?

CZ recommends a competent gunsmith clean the bolt after a large round count and says not to strip further yourself.

high Sources: CZ manual
How often should I check stock screws?

The manual says check and re-tighten stock screws to 3.5 Nm as needed during maintenance.

high Sources: CZ manual

Suppressors & threads

What thread is on threaded models?

US threaded models use 1/2x28; non-US barrels use 1/2x20 UNF. CZ US pages listing 1/2x24 for some models look like data errors — verify on your barrel.

high Sources: CZ Our research notes
Which 457s are suppressor-ready?

Examples: Scout, Pro-Varmint SR, Varmint AT-ONE, Precision Trainer, and SR barrel sets. Check the model page.

high Sources: GunsAmerica CZ-USA
Can I buy a short barrel?

Barrels under 16 in on a rifle make it an SBR under the NFA (US) unless registered. Our suppressed build uses the 16.1 in barrel for that reason.

high Sources: ATF Our research notes
Do you sell rifles, barrels or suppressors?

No. Links go to retailers/dealers; follow federal, state and local law.

high Sources: Our research notes
What's the suppressor tax situation?

Federal NFA tax is $0 since 2026-01-01, but suppressors remain NFA items requiring ATF registration/approval, and state law applies; guidance is in flux.

med Sources: ATF Our research notes
Is modifying my trigger legal?

Generally yes for semi-custom adjustment, but it may void warranty and CZ warns against unsafe settings. Not legal advice.

Troubleshooting

Light strikes or misfires?

Reported on some rifles, especially some .22 WMR and early rifles. Clean the bolt/striker channel, check headspace, try other ammo. See known issues #1.

med Sources: Our research notes
Groups are poor out of the box.

Clean, check stock screw torque (3.5 Nm), then test several ammo lots; some owners also bed or shim. See known issues #5-6.

med Sources: CZ manual Kurt the Gunsmith Our research notes
Bolt feels stiff or clunky.

Over-torqued action screws can bind the bolt; re-torque to spec.

med Sources: Our research notes
Wildly different torque advice online?

Yes — forum posts cite 25-48 in-lb. CZ's published values are 3.5 Nm stock screws (manual) and 5.5 Nm barrel screws (Mini-set).

high Sources: Rimfire Central (forum) CZ manual CZ manual

Compatibility

Do CZ 455 stocks fit?

No — shorter receiver, different screw locations and guard.

high Sources: Our research notes
Do stocks interchange between 457 models?

Yes, subject to barrel-channel size (see CZ's compatibility chart).

high Sources: GunsAmerica CZ manual
Any T1x parts that fit?

No action-level parts. Shared: 1/2-28 muzzle accessories, bipods, ARCA/M-LOK accessories; many makers offer separate T1x and 457 SKUs.

high Sources: Our research notes
What bolt knob thread?

M6x1 (reported by Area 419).
