How we research

Our methodology for every part, price and fitment claim on Rimfire Builds. Last updated 2026-10-11.

1. Sourcing hierarchy

When sources disagree, the higher one wins, and we point out the conflict:

  1. Manufacturer documents: the rifle maker's manuals, spec pages and press releases (Tikka/Sako, CZ).
  2. Part maker documents: the fitment list, instructions and spec sheet for that exact product.
  3. Retailer listings for prices, availability and part numbers, but not as the sole basis for fitment.
  4. Published reviews and match reports.
  5. Owner reports (forums, Reddit). We use these only to flag possible issues, label them as owner reports, and never treat them alone as a spec.

2. Confidence ratings

Every rating comes with a one-line reason and a source link in our parts finder.

3. Prices and dates

A price is what the linked page showed on the date we checked it (each part has a date; site-wide as of Oct 2026). We recheck prices in batches, and a price we can't confirm keeps its old date. The retailer's checkout price always wins. When a merchant was out of stock at the check, we say so.

4. Fitment verification

Before a part appears in a recipe, guide or "top upgrade", we confirm the product page names the right rifle (or platform) and re-check periodically. In the latest pass, 67 of 70 recipe-part pages named the model; the rest are flagged. Fit warnings (handed rails, generation differences, inletting) appear next to the part.

5. Gunsmithing and safety specs

Torque values, trigger-weight limits and procedures come only from manufacturer manuals or the part maker's instructions, and we cite them. We never invent a spec. Where none is published, we say so.

6. Corrections policy

Found an error, a dead link or a better source? Tell us via the contact page (email: contact@rimfirebuilds.com). We verify the report against a source, fix it, and update the page's date. Substantive corrections (a fit or safety claim) are noted on the page. We don't silently delete conflicts.

7. Affiliate independence

Some links earn a commission (disclosure). Commission never decides a pick: documented fit, known issues, then price and availability do. When a merchant with an affiliate program stocks the same item, we may link there instead of the maker; otherwise we link the maker or best source, with no commission. We don't sell firearms, accept paid placements, or take free products for coverage. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page.
