Why train with a rimfire?
.22 LR ammo costs a fraction of centerfire, has almost no recoil, and works on short ranges. Running the same stock, trigger and scope workflow builds habits that carry over: cheek weld, natural point of aim, trigger control, positional building and reading wind. Wind matters even more with a .22.
What is shared between the T1x and T3x?
| Component | Shared? | Source/notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stock footprint | Yes: T1x MTR barreled action fits T3x Lite and UPR stocks | [1] |
| Trigger | Yes: T3/T3x-pattern triggers | TriggerTech Tikka Special lists T3, T3x and T1x [2] |
| Grips, forends, butt pads | Largely yes (T3x modular parts) | e.g. T3x vertical grip; reviews note T3x-compatible accessories [3] |
| Chassis families | Same makers, separate inlets | MDT, KRG, XLR, Grey Birch all make T1x inlets: ORYX T1x, KRG Bravo T1x, MDT ACC T1x |
| Magazines | No | T1x rimfire mags are their own pattern (10-round, flush 5-round) |
| Scope rail | No: T1x-specific rail | EGW T1x rail, Talley T1x rail |
| Weight and recoil | No | T1x MTR 20 in is about 5 lb 11 oz bare [4]; add weight to match |
How do I set up a matched T1x/T3x pair?
- Same stock or chassis family. Put the T1x in the same model of stock as your T3x (e.g. both in a T3x UPR-pattern stock, or both in MDT ACC).
- Same trigger feel. Install the same trigger model and set the same pull weight.
- Same scope family and reticle. Ideally the same model, or at least the same reticle and units. Match the scope height above bore so cheek weld is identical.
- Similar weight and balance. Add forend or M-LOK weights to the T1x to get closer to your centerfire's weight.
- Same bags, bipod and sling. These give the same positional feel.
- Same dope workflow. Use the same ballistic app and data card format, just different drop numbers. .22 LR drop is large past 100 yd (see zeroing and drop).

What doesn't transfer?
- Recoil management and spotting your own impacts at centerfire recoil.
- Bolt-throw feel and magazine changes, which differ.
- Long-range ballistics: a .22 at 100 yd drifts in wind more like a centerfire at much longer range, which is good wind training, but the drop numbers aren't comparable.
What about other brands' trainers?
- Remington 700 pattern: the Bergara B-14R takes Rem 700-compatible stocks, bases and triggers [5].
- CZ 600: the CZ 457 shares some accessories (e.g. a CZ 457/600 cheek rest [6]), but the controls differ.
- Tikka owners in other stocks: chassis makers usually offer both inlets.

Practice drills that transfer
- Dry-fire and live-fire positional building (prone, barricade, tripod) on a timer.
- KYL (know-your-limits) plates at 50–100 yd to train wind calls.
- Cold-bore first-shot drills at the start of each session.
- NRL22 monthly courses of fire are designed exactly for this: NRL22.
A sample monthly training plan
- Week 1: zero confirmation and a ten-shot cold-bore log, recording the first shot of each session separately.
- Week 2: positional practice: prone, kneeling and a barricade on a timer, with the same bags you use on the centerfire.
- Week 3: wind calls. Shoot at 75–100 yd on small plates and log each call against the result.
- Week 4: a full NRL22 course of fire, or a local match, scored honestly.
The value comes from logging: write your dope, misses and corrections in the same notebook or app you use for the centerfire.
Trainers for other platforms
Not a Tikka shooter? Match your centerfire instead: the Ruger Precision Rimfire mirrors the Ruger Precision Rifle's ergonomics with an adjustable bolt throw, and the Bergara B-14R uses a Rem 700 footprint.
