Quick answer
Choose the CZ 457 (from $649 for the Scout on CZ-USA; $999 Varmint MTR) for precision, swappable barrels and calibers, youth-to-adult growth, and NRL22. Choose the Ruger 10/22 (Carbine 1103 about $349.99 MSRP) for semi-auto fun, the lowest cost, and the largest aftermarket. Many owners end up with both.

What makes the CZ 457 different?

What makes the 10/22 different?

Accuracy

We found no controlled test comparing the CZ 457 and the 10/22 with the same ammo. Owners commonly report better precision from bolt guns. In one forum thread, an owner reports about 0.2 in at 50 yd from a bolt gun vs about 0.5 in from his heavy-barrel 10/22 (5-shot groups). That's a low-confidence anecdote [9]. Our CZ 457 specs page lists published reviews. For tight groups from any .22, test ammo lots: ammo testing.

For kids and new shooters

The CZ 457 Scout has a 12 in length of pull and a 16.5 in threaded barrel, and comes with a single-shot adapter that also takes standard 457 mags [10] [11]. It grows with the shooter: put it in an adult stock later. A 10/22 Compact is the semi-auto equivalent. See budget builds.

Calibers

CZ 457s come in .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR, and barrel swaps between calibers are possible with the right parts (check CZ's guidance). The 10/22 is .22 LR only; Ruger makes separate rimfire models for magnum calibers.

Hunting

A 10/22 gives fast follow-up shots on running game. A CZ 457 American or Jaguar is a light, accurate sporter that's quieter suppressed. See small-game setups.

NRL22 and precision matches

Both can enter NRL22. Rifle plus scope MSRP must stay under $1,650 for Base [12]. A 10/22 plus a $300 FFP scope fits easily, but most competitive shooters use bolt guns. A CZ 457 with an Athlon Argos BTR Gen2 or Primary Arms SLx 4-16x44 is a common Base setup. Chassis for the 457: MDT ORYX, KRG Bravo, MDT XRS (Open division). See NRL22 Base.

FAQ

Is the CZ 457 more accurate than a 10/22?

No controlled side-by-side test we found settles it, but owners generally report better precision from bolt guns like the CZ 457. Ammo lot testing matters most.

How much is a CZ 457 vs a 10/22?

CZ-USA lists the 457 Scout at $649 and the Varmint MTR at $999. The 10/22 Carbine 1103 lists at about $349.99 MSRP (Oct 2026).

Can I change barrels on a CZ 457?

Yes. The 457 uses CZ's swappable barrel system. Check headspace and follow the barrel maker's instructions.

Which is better for a child, the CZ 457 Scout or a 10/22?

The CZ 457 Scout has a 12 in length of pull, a single-shot adapter and a bolt action that encourages careful shots. A 10/22 Compact is the semi-auto alternative.
